This is the country’s first maritime zone ever established as a protected area in Chile's history.

Francisco Coloane's Marine Park is inside the Coastal Marine Area, and surrounds Carlos III Island at the Strait of Magellan, in Chile’s XII Region.

The AMCP's main attractions are: Jerónimo Channel, The Tortuoso Passage, Ruppert Islet, Barbara Channel, Fortescue and Cordes Bays and Santa Ines Island and it’s glacier.

The totality of the protected area posseses a vast biological diversity as well as uniqueness, due in part, to the intermingling of the two adjacent oceans (Pacific and Atlantic), the strong winds, the presence of glaciers and the dismembered coastline.

One of the most important facts about the park is that it includes a biological corridor, summer habitat to the humpback whale (and occasionally to the sei whale and orca) in it’s seasonal feeding patterns.

The area also includes colonies of large sea lions and fur seals, as well as important nesting areas for the Magellanic Penguin.

The Park’s protected extension encompasses sea water portions, sea bottom, coastal rocks, beaches and terrains that belong to the state. WS is participating in the development of the Park’s normative and guidelines in collaboration with The Ministry of National Patrimony, The National Environment Agency, The National Forest Agency, the National Fisheries Service, the Regional Government and the World Environmental Fund.

CHILE’S FIRST MARITIME PARK HAS BEEN NAMED AFTER FRANCISCO COLOANE THE RECENTLY DECEASED GREAT CHILEAN NOVELIST BORN, RAISED AND PERMANENTLY INSPIRED IN THE AUSTRAL MARITIME THEMATIC. THE PARK WAS DECLARED AND CHRISTENED UNDER HIS NAME ON AUGUST THE 5°, 2003 IN THE WRITER’S ¨FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH.
