These gentle giants are
famous for their singing abilities. Their unique hunting
skill, called bubblenet feeding, involves a group of humpbacks
working together to capture schools of herring. Each whale
has a particular role in the process: One whale swims
in a circle while blowing bubbles under a school of herring.
When the bubbles rise, the school ofherring can not escape
and form into a tight ball in the center. Other whales
vocalize -grunting or screaming - to scare the herring
to the surface. The whales then rise with their mouths
wide open to captur elarge amounts of fish.
From the Condor, dominating
the heights, to the Pinguins that nest in the islands,
a considerable number of different species of birds populate
the area . The marine mammals are
widely represented by the sea lions, dolphins, occationnally
orcas and of course, the whales. Vegetation grows despite violent winds and weather conditions.
Chile's first marine park
has been named after Francisco Coloane, the recently deceased
great chilean novelist, born, raised and inspired
in the austral maritime thematic. The park was declared
and christened under his name on August the Fifth, 2003,
in the first anniversary of his death.
Whalesound's fleet has
been specially conformed for navigation in normal Magellanic conditions. In the designing and building
the campsite at Carlos III Island, Whalesound has used
the most advanced available technology.
