Francisco Coloane´s Marine Park was created to preserve a unique place where the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet.

From the condor, dominating the heights, to the penguins that nest in the islands, a considerable number of different bird species populate the area (albatros, petrels, fisherkings, hummingbirds, pidenes, owls, among others).

Marine mammals are widely represented by sea lions, dolphins, occassionnally orcas and, of course, humpback whales. Underseas life is rich enough to feed these marine giants which have been using this place as a feeding ground for centuries.

Vegetation grows in spite of violent winds and hard weather conditions. coigüe de Magallanes, ñire, cipres de las Gauitecas, canelo are some of the few tree species, that survive climatic conditions. Nevertheless, a formidable vegetal life develops on the surface: the Peat Moss, a complex and fragile eco-system with little plants, ferns, fungus and decomposing organical matter.
